You tried thing as the best description you came up with. Now this is a little unspecific, isn't it?
Do you want to describe a piece of hardware, that is, anything that is subject to gravity and/or that you could touch with your hand?
Or do you refer to something nonmaterial, that is something you can see on the screen, some software and processes?
Note that normally no part of a computer is explicitely named thing.
