Did you perhaps look for service? A number of applications that supply basic functionality are sometimes referred to as services.
A Server can be both a piece of software or a computer running such server software.
A Server is like a Waiter in real life. Waiters bring you food and beverages, Servers bring you data and also co-ordinate work between multiple "Client" computers.
For example, a "Database Server" gives you database tables and allows you to extract data from them. A good database server will also prevent two users from changing the same rows at the same time, preventing confusion and mistakes.
Words like Server, in a business context, include "System" which is a word often used to describe a database server and lots of other servers and also clients that work together towards a common goal, like running the accounts.
Another type of server is a "web server" which serves you web pages like this one, or an "email server" which communicates using standard protocols to pass emails all around the world.
There are very many competing types of server product on Linux, probably more so than with Windows. Linux and Unix based Servers run the Internet, and always have done.
