A front-end is a bit like a client. If you accept the proposition that clients talk to servers most often across a network then you might consider a front-end to be one that doesn't. On the other hand, the terms are pretty much interchangable.

Front ends are used to make back-ends, or servers, more attractive and more user-friendly.
