Talk:Installing new software

I have been looking at Linux (Susi distro) and the most anoying thing I find is that once one has installed a 3rd party application, an icon for using it is not always placed on the desktop or under the 'Applications' menue.

e.g. 'Opera' is well behaved and gives you an Icon while 'Firefox' leaves you wondering how on earth you start using it.

I accept this is not part of Linux itself but I do believe that the community aught to define some sort of standard for how 3rd party applications should behave when installed. This is a feature which, by comparision, is very good in Windows.
