Talk:Gentoo-Installation
From Grokdoc
In addition to point number "1" I would add from my own experiance that its a good idea to save a local copy of the "Install Handbook" and any other web referance media (ie forum documentation threads) on a disk or if its dual boot on another partition so you can mount that partition and read the manual in a text mode web browser. This was amazingly handy for me as I could do word searches and find information I required much quicker.

I liked an install over ssh: have a running system on the LAN with the Handbook in the browser and copy and paste the commands from the handbook into the ssh window.

Note the '-k' emerge option will only find packages on the local system, that you have first built with '-b'. This won't therefore give any advantage to new users as they won't use the '-b' option to build any binary packages in the first place.
Also, point No. 1 is highly relevant when you discover that your network doesn't work and you need to refer to the Handbook to find out how to get it to (work).

I'm a new Gentoo user, so I'm reluctant to speak on it's behalf (specifically, edit the actual installation page), but I feel it important to note that gentoo doesn't provide an installer, it provides tools to install an operating system, and directions to do it. It's fantastic for people that like to learn how things work. Installing Gentoo from stage1 is like a super-concentrated "How Stuff Works" article, all about gnu/linux.
I absolutely love the handbook. It's concise, friendly, but not too friendly. The handbook acquires a certain personification that I simply adore. It's like having a professional sit there and build Gentoo with you. Definately a fine piece of work.
Once I've got more experience, I'd like to contribute to the Handbook. It would be nice if partitioning was a little more verbose. It doesn't spend any time telling you how to partition your system and preserve other operating systems. A dual-boot is something new gnu/linux users usually want. I don't think I've ever seen someone jump into it head-first.
Gentoo irc channel
Another great source of assistance is the Gentoo irc channel.
It is a freenode channel at: irc.freenode.net:6667 #gentoo
