From Grokdoc
Short Focused Brief. --Sjgibbs 18:12, 14 Jun 2004 (EDT)
"Our goal is to create a useful manual" in the first line is asking for documentation, which is not what we want. "Our goal is to collect usability data" would be better, in my opinion. Later on, we can add something about the usability data being analyzed and used to squash bugs, help write better Human Interface Guidelines, help projects direct themselves to more usable programs and environments, and, yes, also writing more useful manuals. If we straightforward ask for a manual, this is what we will get, I fear. -- 4lex 04:25, 17 Jun 2004 (EDT)
Just to add my 2 cents, I agree with 4lex's remarks above. Writing a manual is one thing. Observing and recording what a user does in attempting to use an application is another. If wrting a manual is our long term goal, our short term goal is to collect usability data. Dangling the notion of writing a manual out there is confusing the situation. Cc 21:09, 20 Jun 2004 (EDT)
The GNOME Usability Project
I happened to be browsing something complete unrelated to GrokDoc and stumbled upon a link to the GNOME Usability Study Report. This seems like its the kind of report the GrokDoc will eventually want to create. But I must say, there doesn't seem to be a whole lot of usability data coming in. What's going on? Has GrokDoc stalled? Cc 13:42, 22 Jun 2004 (EDT)
- I think it is starting slow. We had problems with the focus (on howtos rather than on usability reports), but I think this is getting better, with some real, detailed, reports coming in regularly. We still have to put the infrastructure into its place, so that we can properly organize the data. I fear if we had a huge input data right now we would be overflooded. I would gladly see an increase in activity during the next few weeks, though. Maybe we should be slashdotted again when everything is working properly... -- 4lex 14:11, 22 Jun 2004 (EDT)
