SuSE-SuSE Firewall
From Grokdoc
Suse firewall is one of the better firewalls out there from the beginner usability standpoint. One ommission in the supplied printed manual (and other documentation?) just seems inconsistant with this. It still catches me off-guard:
When a change to the IP settings is made and saved in yast / Network Devices / Network card, one can no longer connect to the outside world again until after also "tickeling" the settings over in yast / security and Users / Firewall.
By "tickeling" I mean simply pressing "next" at the bottom of each page to re-accept the previously entered data in Yast Firewall, then in the following little "save settings" screen, press "continue" to save and exit the firewall.
Now, at this point, a ping, for example will actually get out of the computer to attempt to reach it's intended destination.
Note that this isn't ever a problem the first time one sets up the networking: It gets you by supprise on the second visit when you think you have the concept.
Just fixing the manual is the minimum fix to this. Instead it would be much better to fix it in yast: Yast should automatically renew the firewall settings correctly whenever the final "continue" button is pressed in yast / network card. Maybe this is the intended operation but is broken in Suse 9.0 and 9.1 ? If Yast were fixed properly, then the documentation would be fine as-is and there would be less for everyone to read, learn and remember.
