Red Hat-What firewall do I have running?
From Grokdoc
my user has no idea what a firewall is and doesn't want to worry about it. He says it is part of the computer (meaning the OS) and he shouldn't be bothered to worry about it.
- A firewall on the "digital highway" is like wearing a seatbelt on a normal highway. I suppose a small amount of knowlege about firewalls is important to a user.
It would be the kernel doing the actual filtering (iptables). The common user shouldn't be worried about the details, but he should know:
- that he is using it
- what the firewall is doing in general
- that it was configured by a competent administrator
Alas, the days of going on the net without being attacked are long gone.

Perhaps the easiest way around this is to buy an ADSL Router (as opposed to a USB modem). Most of these allow all outgoing connections by default, and block all incoming. You could then quite happily run no firewall at all on the PC.
