Red Hat-Evolution

I'm actually running Fedora Core 1 & 2. Fedora Core is the open source project that Redhat's commercial releases are based on. Evolution is an extremely well put together email client. If you're coming over from Windows, you'll like how similar it is to Outlook. I've used it exclusively for a few years. I've used some of the others, but they just didn't do it for me. If you're used to using Netscape Mail, use Mozilla Mail, you won't notice any differences, other than no crashing.

^ -- This is a somewhat false statement. Evolution isn't the most stable app in the world. I know because I have used it for a number of years now and it crashes all the time. But I can't go back to Mozilla or Thunderbird because neither have VFolders and I use them a lot -- Oliver Jones

^^ -- I took this statement to mean that Mozilla Mail is more stable than Netscape. Not that Evolution necessarily was. Perhaps some clarification by the original author is in order.

One down side of Evolution is that its IMAP mail handling is not as mature as that of Thunderbird (and probably Mozilla mail, which thunderbird is based on, but I haven't tried).

I've been using Evolution exclusively for more than half a year now. I have experienced just two crashes. To me that seems very little like "all the time" - Evolution is really great. I only miss a few improvements in the filter settings.

The lack of Bayesian Filtering in Evolution is a killer. I pretty quickly gave up on it when I couldn't find out how to get it working. I just get too much spam to set up filters by hand. This is a major issue, and any email client without this feature is dead in the water. Fortunately I knew that Thunderbird existed and did what I needed, and so I installed that.

I just looked up Bayesian filtering, and found Auto filtering in Evolution 1.4 I have added this information to LQWiki:Spam filtering Thomas Frayne

I have used Evolution on RH7.2, RH8, RH9, FC1. Crashes were frequent until FC1, and almost non-existant since. My main gripe is the lack of Boolean criteria in Filters and Virtual folders. It is difficult to get the kind of filtering I want without basing virtual folders on other virtual folders, and that frequently doesn't work right. Thomas Frayne
