Other Distros-Installation

Mepis Linux
Chosen based on the notion that any distro that only comes with two pages of explanation would be a good one for newbies.
First observable problem came after booting the CD and attempting to follow the installation instructions, which read:
"To install MEPIS Linux, login to Linux as user 'demo' with password 'demo' and on the desktop click on MEPIS Installer to start the installer program."
Problem is that the desktop does not contain any such icon. The closest is 'MEPIS Installation Center', other candidates are 'MEPIS System Center' and 'MEPIS User Utilities'.
Many newbies become extremely literal when faced with new(possibly daunting) tasks---and a literal mind sees a difference between 'MEPIS Installer' and 'MEPIS Installation Center'. A small speed bump, but still a speed bump.
Aurora Linux 1.0 is a distribution for Sun Microsystem's SPARC architecture. I am currently trying to install it, but I am having trouble getting XFree86 configured, just like I've had trouble with it when I tried Gentoo and then Debian. If someone could provide some verbose help on Aurora installation, particularly XFree86 configuration, I would be a very happy camper.
An observation on Aurora: there is a gotcha on configuring XFree86 on Ultra 10s that the user ought to be aware of. In the installation script, in the post-installation configuration, it presents a dialog where you select and provide details on your monitor, and then you select your video card. This is important. If the device in the fb0 slot is not the actual video card (say, an ATI Mach64), but rather it is either the Elite3D or Creator3D framebuffer, then it is imperative that the Elite3D or Creator3D is selected. The problem is the config script probes and finds the ATI card and decides it is the one to use, which tripped me up in trying to set up X in Debian and Gentoo. If you can figure out how to set the ATI card to fb0, then I imagine you would be OK. There are advantages (namely performance) to doing this, and figuring out how to do this is my current quest.
