Knoppix doesn't have any facilities to automagically configure a network interface if you boot without it plugged in, and then plug it in later. If you go to the Knoppix menu, there is a place to configure the network interface, but it pops up a mysterious dialog asking whether or not to use "DHCP broadcast", which is terrifying and confusing for the newbie.
