As a newby, I had great problems to configure my home printer. I tried magicfilterconfig (because I read about it in the "installation guide" I received with debian woody, from a linux magazine), which worked very well -although text-based-. I tried it with every driver I saw, but the printer didn't print. The problem was, the driver for my printer was not installed. Only after looking in linuxprinting.org (which took me a long while to hear about) did I think of apt-get installing the desired driver (I did not think about the possibility of some printer-drivers being installed and some not).
